With the older white bodied dolls being thicker/thinner--could it be a matter of hugging? As the dolls get hugged, their bodies might compress. So it could be that the ones with skinnier bodies were more hugged (?). It's just an idea! When I sew dolls the instructions usually indicate to overstuff them a bit. That wouldn't explain the vinyl being thicker or thinner, but could impact the torso's width.
